St. John School is located in the North End of Boston. The building resides in the historic North Square, just steps away from the Paul Revere House. The school is the only parochial school in the North End.
St. John School opened in 1895. The first commencement was held on June 22, 1919. The school flourished throughout the century serving the Italian community in the North End. In 1960, the library was built. In 1980, St. John School underwent extensive renovation work in order to comply with new safety and fire codes. In 1983, St. John School opened its doors to the children of St. Anthony School, which had just closed. In 1992, St. John School became the North End inter-parish school. A stablized enrollment and innovative fund raising techniques have kept the school financially sound. Student enrollment in the primary grades indicates that the student population will continue to rise. In 1995, the school embarked on a period of preparation for the next century by implementing "Technology 2000".
Currently, the school provides a challenging program teaching moral, social, academic, artistic, and technological skills to approximately 212 students. Students now come from not only the North End, but also many other Boston neighborhoods, as well as surrounding communities. Through the City of Boston, free bus transportation is provided for students living outside a two mile radius of the school.
Our hope at St. John is that our heritage can be preserved and be the foundation during the next millenium - for the betterment of the community, the school, and, most of all, the children.

Boston's Historic North End
A hidden treasure in the North End of Boston stands St. John Elementary School. Students come from various Boston neighborhoods as well as surrounding cities and towns. The school has an enrollment of over 180 students in grades K1 through 8.
At the helm of St. John School is the Principal, Sister Eileen Harvey, CSJ. She has been at St. John for 21 of her 51 years as a Sister of St. Joseph.
St. John School is the only remaining Catholic School in the North End. Sister Eileen has had the vision and tenacity to see that St. John would continue into the next century, and it has. The school has become wonderfully diverse and as Sister says, "the diversity has enriched the education of our children."
Academic excellence with a strong emphasis on values is at the core of St. John School. The 2003-2004 school year unveiled the opening of the "Velia N. and Carlos H. Tosi Recreation Center", a renovated area of the school which provides gym space for students. The curriculum has also expanded with Sister Eileen as Principal. She has added and maintained programs in Italian language, computers, science and art. Most recently the school has added a teacher for grades 6, 7 and 8 to enrich math and science studies.
