Summer Math

Workbooks for Summer Math practice can be found at both Barnes and Noble and Borders book stores. They are typically found in the children's section of each store. Any math review workbook for the grade your child has just finished will serve as a helpful review of the topics we have covered.

The following books are suggestions for summer practice. None of the books are mandatory and students will not be awarded extra credit for completing them. It is the responsibility of Parents and guardians to grade the work, the answers are provided in the back of each book.

There are topics in some books, especially advanced geometry, negative exponents and some probability that students may not understand; students should leave these pages out.

Rainbow Bridge Publishing has a series of books, Skill Builders for all grades that review fractions, decimals, percents and general math by grade. They are easy, manageable books. The website lists extensive resources available.  Go to www.rbpbookscatalog.com for a full listing of the books available, click on Skill builders Series.

The two below however are ones I have used before with students to prepare them for the next grade during summer vacation.

Skills Builder Math       Grade 6           ISBN: 1932210059

Good general review for students in grades 7.

Skill Builder Math         Grade 4-5        ISBN: 1932210822

It's listed as a 4-5 grade book but is one of the best fraction decimal percent review books around good for every grade.

Other resources available:

Spectrum Grade 7 - Math Series  - ISBN: 0769637078  - great for students entering grade 8

Spectrum Grade 6  Math Series ISBN: 076963706 - great for students entering grade 7

Master Skills Math, Grade 6 (Master Skills Series) ISBN: 1561890162 - great for students entering grade 7

For students coming into grade 6 both of these books provide excellent review of skills necessary for grade 6 math:

Master Skills Math, Grade 5 (Master Skills Series) ISBN: 1561890154
Scholastic Success With Fractions & Decimals Workbook (Grade 5) ISBN: 0439445078

Students entering grade 6 must know their multiplication tables through the 12 x 12. The use of calculators is not permitted in the junior high.

Students planning on taking the ISEE, SSAT or Catholic High School entrance exam, this fall, should obtain a copy of the appropriate prep book and begin working on the math sections this summer.

Have a wonderful summer!! See you in September.

Miss Cassidy
