Grade 4 Summer Reading
Dear Future Fourth Graders,

Next year you will be fourth graders! We are going to have so much fun in fourth grade! You are required to read two books over the summer. The first book must be a biography. Choose someone that you are interested in learning more about. Make sure that you choose a just right book. It should not be super easy, but you should not struggle with your reading either.

Your second book must be by author Beverly Cleary. Some of my favorites include Ramona the Pest, Ramona’s World, and Ramona and Her Father. You may choose any Beverly Cleary book. There are many other Beverly Cleary books to choose from. Please don’t feel like you have to read one of the books I listed above. You must also complete the activities that go with your summer reading.

Biography Activities

Pretend that you are the person you read about for your biography. Write a friendly letter to me telling me about you. Make sure that you use the proper friendly letter format and that you include all five parts. I have given you some questions that you can answer in your letter.  Add any other important information about your life. Your letter must be in pen on white lined paper. Writing must be neat with no crossouts. Include an illustration of the person you read about and draw a scene that demonstrates what this person did at some point in her or his life.

1. Who are you?
2. Where are you from?
3. What are some of your important accomplishments?
4. When and where were you born?

When you come back to school you will present your biographies to your classmates. More information will be given when we return to school in the fall.

Beverly Cleary book Activities

Write a book review of the story you read. Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not? It is fine if you do not like the book, but you need to explain why.  Did the author do a good job describing the scenes so you could make pictures in your mind? What did you like about the story? Is there anything you would change about the story? What was your favorite part of the story? What was your least favorite part of the story? Again, use pen and white lined paper. Writing should be neat with no crossouts.

Cursive Writing

In fourth grade, students will need to write in cursive on all tests and quizzes. Please make sure that your cursive writing is legible and that you can form all capital and lowercase letters. I do take points off if I am unable to read a child’s writing.  I have included a cursive writing template.

Reading Log

I have also attached a reading log to your report. Write down any other books you read this summer. You do not need to complete any projects; you just need to complete the log. Remember, the more you read, the better reader you will become.

All of your summer reading activities are due the first day of school. These will count as your first reading grade of fourth grade! Late projects will not be accepted.

Happy Reading!
