February 2012 – Grade 8 News
Dear Families:
Welcome to Catholic Schools' Week! This is a great week to reflect on the importance of a great Catholic school education which St John School clearly provides for each and every student. Every now and then we need to reflect on how fortunate we are to be part of the only Catholic school in the North End. We also need to accentuate the positive, as they say!!!
Along that line, as you are well aware, this will be Sister Eileen's last year here at St John School. I have taught under Sister's supervision for 28 years, and I, as well as the rest of the faculty, am truly appreciative of all that she has accomplished during her tenure here! We look forward to many celebrations in her honor, starting starting with the Gala in April.
Grade 8 will head prayer in honor of students on Wednesday. For special lunch, we will head to Vito's on Salem Street- should be fun!
Grade 7 continues in our "Choices" unit, and in May we will be get to meet Terrence Roberts, one of the Little Rock 9, who showed such courage in playing a part of integrating the all white Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas. We put in a request to host the event. A decision will be made in February. Regardless of the venue, we will still get to meet Mr., Roberts! This unit has proved to be one of my very favorites, and I am so appreciative of Facing History and Ourselves' role in this and for the material they provided!
Grade 6 is winding down their study of the Greeks, ending with Perseus and the infamous Medusa. In honoring Black History Month, we will be reading Mildred Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Grammar help continues every Tuesday after school!
Grade 8 has finished Witness, a novel on the influence that the KKK had on a small Vermont town in 1924. We learned a lot about prejudice and stereotyping. Next month we begin our Holocaust Unit.
BTW, graduation fee, $125.00 is due by mid March. If you have any questions regarding this, please address them to Sister Eileen.
Go Pat's.....we diehard Bostonians wish them well! Alas...the NY/ Boston rivalry continues....
My best to all of you! Fondly, Mrs. Sarzana
